I’ve just released a new open source Astro theme that takes a step back from the flat design trends of the last decade: the Astro Skeuomorphism Theme.

Why skeuomorphism?

Most websites right now look the same: flat, dark mode or white, minimal. There’s nothing wrong with that, but it got boring. Skeuomorphism borrows from physical interfaces - depth, shadow, tactile buttons - and makes things feel like you can actually press them.

The theme pulls from classic iOS and some neomorphic ideas. It’s a bit retro and a bit modern at the same time, which is exactly what I was going for.

Core features

The theme isn’t just about aesthetics. It’s production-ready: buttons that look like you can actually press them, glassmorphic cards with realistic depth and shadows, retro-inspired typography, and micro-interactions that reinforce the tactile feel. On the technical side: 100 Lighthouse score for performance and accessibility, dark/light mode with theme persistence, fully responsive, CSS variable customization, and a GitHub Pages deployment workflow included.

What’s included

The stack: Astro 5.16, React 19 for interactive components, Tailwind CSS v4 for styling and theming, TypeScript throughout, and shadcn/ui components customized for skeuomorphic aesthetics.

Get started

Whether you’re building a portfolio, blog, or something creative, this gives you a starting point that doesn’t look like everything else.

Next steps

I’m continuing to refine the theme and add more skeuomorphic components. If you build something with it, I’d love to see it. Open a pull request, drop me a note, or catch me on GitHub.
